OCTOBER VISITING TEACHING MESSAGE
Honoring Our Covenants - Visiting teaching is an expression of our discipleship and a way to honor our covenants as we serve and strengthen one another.
Dear Sisters, I loved President Hinckley’s encouragement to “try a little harder to be a little better.” That thought can certainly apply to our visiting teaching. My heart is touched and my eyes get a little wet when I hear about the beautiful service you provide to many of the sisters in our ward. And, sometimes my heart aches when I review the visiting teaching report and see lists of sisters that haven't had a visit, and some for multiple months.

The responsibilities of a visiting teacher are to teach and to minister. Delivering a lesson each month is teaching, but not always ministering. Sometimes instead of a visit, a sister needs a flower, a note, or a phone call.

When we “minister” our visiting teaching is never “done,” and that’s ok. Find a way to report about the contact and the spiritual and temporal well-being of the sisters. It can be done at the church. It can be done at their home. But there is no substitute for the personal contact – this is where you show you care.
We don’t get to choose our partner, or whom we visit and schedules don’t always mesh. Visiting teachers need to work together to find inspired ways to work together to watch over their sisters. Maybe it is one of you visiting and another one doing something else.

Visiting teaching is one of the things we do with faith. We show that we believe in Christ and His gospel and in His way by doing this one thing that gives us the chance to behave as He behaved and do as He did.

This month it is my prayer that we will “try a little harder to be a little better.”
