Lindon Cannery

The Lindon Cannery is looking for individuals who are interested in serving as missionaries for 2010. We would welcome the chance to visit with you about this opportunity. Please call us at 801-785-0998 if you are interested. We can answer any questions you may have about serving.

The following stakes have been given assignments to call missionaries. You do not need to be from one of these stakes to serve. However, if you belong to one of the stakes listed below and would like to look into serving, please call the Cannery with any questions and/or fill out the attached form and take it to your Bishop or Stake President.
Highland South, Highland
Cedar Hills
American Fork, American Fork West
Heber East
Eagle Mountain West
Orem Cascade,Orem Sharon Park, Orem Heatheride, Orem Cherry Hill, Orem Lakeridge
Provo West, Provo East
Edgemont North
Springville West, Springville Spring Creek, Springville Spring Creek South
Hobble Creek, Hobble Creek West
Spanish Fork Canyon Ridge

This call is for the 2010 year. Missionaries serve at least 8 hours per week, two 4-hour shifts. The work week for Cannery missionaries is Tuesday through Friday with occasional Saturdays during the peach season (August/September). You are usually asked to serve 1 or 2 Saturdays during peaches. The Wet Pack Cannery is normally closed during the month of July..

Individual schedules and specific jobs will be determined by the Cannery and the individual after they have been oriented to the various tasks. There will be a new missionary meeting on Monday, January 11th, 9:00 a.m. at the Cannery to begin this process. This is an important meeting if you are seriously looking into this opportunity. Individuals must be temple worthy to serve in this capacity.
It is understood that there are times when missionaries need to be gone.

Missionaries can always switch with other missionaries if they need to miss their shift. There are several people who do the same job and there has never been a problem with finding someone to fill in when needed.

Those who are called to serve at the Cannery should be able to stand for extended periods of time. Those who have mechanical aptitude are specifically needed. Not all positions require lifting, but if lifting is necessary, it would average around 25 lbs. Any heavier lifting is assisted by machinery or help from patrons or other missionaries. There are some office and orientation positions which do not require either lifting or standing for extended periods.

The following information will help in filling out The Recommendation for Part-Time Missionary (attached). It needs to be signed by your Bishop and Stake President and brought to the Cannery or sent to: Church-Service Missionary Office, 50 E North Temple St., Rm. 152, Salt Lake City, UT 84150-4060 or faxed to 801-240-1726. On the form, you will need to identify Roger Lloyd as the “Name of Department Supervisor Contacted” and the Lindon Cannery as the “Name of Organization”. The “Start Date” should be listed as January 1, 2010 even though you won’t begin working until the end of January.

The Cannery is a wonderful place to serve a part-time mission. Please feel free to contact us with any concerns. Our offices are closed Friday, January 1st for the New Year holiday. Please leave a message if we are not available and we will be sure to get back with you.

Thank you so much for all of your help. We know you'll be amazed at all the dolls, etc. that will be on display that night! Are you ready, Sr. Hasson?

We have some exciting news from the EFY front!! The theme for EFY 2010 has been announced!! “Courage to Stand Strong” with the theme scripture Joshua 1:9 “Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee withersoever thou goest.” You can find more information at http://efy.byu.edu, and you can even download a “theme poster”!!

Additionally, we have a new registration process for EFY that has been re–designed to save you time and energy! It”s as easy as One, Two, Three!!!

One! — Beginning September 15, 2009 thru January 19, 2010: create a BYU Net ID, fill out a form with your name, address and email address. No money is due and no session selection is made. This phase lets us know of your intentions and puts your name on the list for the random selection process in step two.

Two! — Beginning January 22 through March 2 (8:59am), 2010: your name will be randomly selected, and you will be notified that you can login and register for an EFY session of your choice. Payment is required at this time, roommate requests can be made, AND you may select up to three other friends to register at that same time (if they completed Phase One also).

Three! — Beginning March 2, (9:00am) 2010: if you missed part one and couldn’t participate in part two, all remaining spaces will be open for enrollment.
Hopefully this new process will cut out long computer wait times. You can find more information about the process and the EFY 2010 theme, “Courage to Stand Strong,” at http://efy.byu.edu.

In a Jam?

Peach Jam (Tastes like marmalade)

5 c. smashed peaches
5 c. sugar
1 small bottle marschino cherries (8 oz.)
1 can pineapple, crushed (Lg can) (20 oz.)
1 pkg. orange jello (3 oz.) (Nina says you need to use real jello mix not a generic brand. It has more flavor.)
1pkg. lemon jello (3 oz.)

Peel peaches using really hot water to make the skins come off easy. Then smash to desired consistency. Mix peaches, sugar, cherries, pineapple in pot on stove. Bring to a slow boil and boil for 20 minutes stirring periodically so as not to scorch the bottom. Remove from heat and stir in both packages of jello. Pour into hot bottles. (Can remove when hot from dishwasher or boil in water on stove top.) Clean top of bottles with a rag to insure a good seal. Put hot lids on bottle and twist on ring as hard as possible. Then slightly loosen ring so bottle mouth will not chip and break. Turn jar upside down and let set for 24 hours allowing the jar to seal. For shelf life, tighten rings once more.

Makes 6 pints of jam

Lesson #38 - The Wentworth Letter, taught by Robbi Ann Sorensen

The Wentworth Letter is the Prophet Joseph Smith’s account of “the rise, progress, persecution, and faith of the Latter-day Saints,” including the statements known as the Articles of Faith.

The Articles of Faith describe fundamental doctrines and principles of our religion.

“We believe in God the eternal Father, and in His Son Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.

“We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam’s transgression.

“We believe that through the atonement of Christ all mankind may be saved by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.

“We believe that the first principle and ordinances of the Gospel are: (1) Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; (2) Repentance; (3) Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; (4) Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.

“We believe that a man must be called of God by prophecy and by the laying on of hands, by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof.

“We believe in the same organization that existed in the primitive Church, viz.: apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, etc.

“We believe in the gift of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, etc.

“We believe the Bible to be the word of God, as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.

“We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the kingdom of God.

“We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion will be built upon this [the American] continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory.

“We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.

“We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.

“We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul, We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report, or praiseworthy, we seek after these things. [See Articles of Faith 1:1–13.]

New Operation of Lindon Home Storage Center

The Lindon Home Storage Center is pleased to announce a change in operation that supports the counsel of the First Presidency and the basic guidelines for family home storage.

Please review the pamplet "All Is Safely Gathered In."

The changes will simplify the Home Storage Center's ability to serve the individual and family with a walk-in, open schedule program. There will not be a pre-set or assigned Stake or Ward schedule.

Food Storage Minimums

400 lbs of grains, not just wheat, 17.5 oz/day
60 lbs of beans, 2.6 oz/day
10 quarts cooking oil, shortening, butter, .87 oz/day
60 lbs sugar/honey, 2.63 oz/day
8 lbs salt, not only for eating-curing, .35 oz/day
16 lbs powdered milk, .70 oz/day
14 gallons drinking water - FOR 1ST 2 WEEKS

Two 5 gallon buckets will hold 75 lbs wheat, rice or other grain. This means that you will need 11 buckets of grain for each person in your family.

If you store all your grains in #10 cans - wheat, rice, corn, etc - you will need 64 cans or 10.5 cases per person. Serving about 2 cups un-ground grain per day.

Rolled oats are lighter but bulkier, so they require more storage space. You would need 124 cans or 21 cases per person.

Pasta - you will need 32 cans or 5.25 cases per person.

Beans - a 25 lb bag will fit in a single 5 gallon bucket with some space left over. So 2 buckets will hold a one person supply, or twelve #10 cans or about 2 cases. Serving 3/4 cup per day.

This is not much food folks. Get the basics and then immediately begin adding more kinds of grain, soup mix, canned and/or dehydrated vegetables and fruits. Add a variety more than the minimal survival diet. For example: the minimum recommended amount of grain, when ground and prepared will yield about 6 small biscuits or a plateful of pancakes. It's enough to keep you alive, but a far cry from being satisfying and not being hungry.

The one month kit costs $18.69. All they need is 12 of these per person to survive. They fit nicely under beds or stacked in a closet. Less than $1.00/day!!!

PLACES TO PURCHASE

Wheat - I would buy this by the bag at the cannery ASAP! I would order 6 gallon buckets from Walton's or where ever you have a better source. You can even order these buckets later. Getting the food is probably the most important right now.

Flour - I would also buy this at the cannery. It is currently $7 for a 25 lb bag.

Pasta - I would buy macaroni and spaghetti at the cannery by the can. Buy egg noodles from Walton's.

Sugar - I would buy by the bag at the Macey's Case Lot Sale in March. It should be about $9.

Beans - I would buy by the can at the cannery.

Lentils - I would buy at Walton's.

Oats - I would buy at the cannery. If you like other grains, get them at Walton's. Like Cream iof Wheat (Germade) is really cheap by the can at Walton's. Check Macey's this month.

Rice - I would buy at the cannery or Sam's club.

TIPS
Vanilla extract will improve the flavor of powdered milk. Learn how to make and use wheat gluten (smoke flavor, chicken or beef bouillon adds good flavor). Chocolate syrup and powdered drink mixes help with appetite fatigue. Vitamins and protein powders will boost the nutrition levels of foods that may have suffered losses during processing and longer storage. Try Costco and Sam's Club for the best prices. The cannery has Cocoa Mix for the best price around.

This information was provided by the ward Provident Living Specialist.

Some weeks you will have leftover change. Save the change each week in a kitty to be used for the weeks you may exceed $5.00 (for example, as when purchasing wheat or milk). This should be enough to sustain 2 people for 1 year. For every 2 people in your family, add $5 more and double or triple the amount of the item you are buying for that week.

Lindon Cannery Changes

There is an important change to the Family Canning procedure. Due to new product clearance regulations, no product can be sold the same day it is produced. Those who schedule the first day of any product must pick up their order after the last day the item is produced. This means if a product is produced on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, those who are registered on the first day cannot pick up their items until the following Friday or Monday. Pick-up dates for each product will be given at the orientation for your shift. We encourage those who live close to the Cannery to schedule on the first days to help those living further from the Cannery. You may pick up your product at subsequent shifts, but all products must be picked up before the day of the overage sale. We can not have anyone picking up on the same day as the overage sale.Just a few reminders for successfully completing your Family Canning Registration:

1) We now have 5,500 people on our distribution list. Understandably, we cannot respond to emails sent to the distribution email address. You can not schedule family canning through email. Please mail the completed paper copy of the registration along with a self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE) must be mailed to the Lindon Cannery, 940 W Center, Lindon, UT 84042. We will return your confirmation in your SASE.

2) You must pull the attachment in through the Adobe Reader to print off a readable copy of the registration form. We cannot process registrations that are not in the proper format. If you do not have the Adobe Reader downloaded, please go to the following website. It is a free download: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html. This program works like any other word processor. It is easiest to save the attachment to your desktop and then open and print the registration through the Adobe Reader program.

3) You are only allowed to schedule one shift per person until the Monday just before we begin production on an item. On the prior Monday, if there are open shifts or cancellations, we will take phone registrations ONLY for the product being produced that week.

4) Please remember to indicate the number of cases you want to order of each product you are scheduling. If an amount is not listed, you will be assigned 2 cases. This number cannot be increased. (You are always able to lower your order amounts when you check in for your shift.) You may, however, schedule a 2nd shift, if there are any available, beginning the Monday of the same week we begin processing the item.

5) Please only “X” through dates and times that you absolutely cannot come. We will not schedule anything that has an “X” through it. The 9:00 and 10:00 shifts are the most requested and fill up the fastest. We will schedule your circled dates and times first. FYI: The Church Canneries are still not able to offer canned meats for family canning. We do not know when or if this will change. We have no further information on the status of this concern but will let you know as soon as anything changes! We are all hoping this will be resolved soon.

At this time, this Spring Family Canning schedule may be the only one offered at the Lindon Cannery in 2009 due to scheduled repairs on the building in October, November & December. If the maintenance is rescheduled, we will contact you through this distribution email.
